It was another quiet day in rural Gujarat, India: the lush green fields roll towards the horizon, crisscrossed with the earth-brown farm-to-market roads that link Gujarat’s 86,000 rural villages to one another and, ultimately, to the cities. A group of women worked at a measured pace in the tropical heat, some go to their small vending/trading shops, some go for manufacturing readymade garments, spices, leather products, packaging material. In the evening they go back home with more than Rs.50 in their hands: substantial money for them.
